To clarify, I was not raised racist; Mom did not make any overt attempt to make her bias a part of my mindset, she just was too careless to conceal hers. And her contempt was not reserved strictly for black people, she didn't care much for Italians either, who comprised most of our "nextdoor" neighbors. Odd, since she then spent a couple of years taking Italian language courses at a nearby college in her 50's. Languages she loved; people, not so much. Perhaps curiously, I don't recall Dad showing any hints of racism.
